Spaying and neutering is one of the most important health decisions you can make for your cat or dog, and it's not just good for your pet--it's good for you and your community, too! At Companion Pet Clinic, our Klamath Falls veterinarian team is proud to provide spay and neuter services. We're happy to answer any questions you have about this common veterinary procedure--keep reading to learn more.
A spay procedure (done on females) or a neuter procedure (done on males) is a way to render your animal companion sterile so that it can't reproduce. It works by removing the ovaries and uterus in female cats and dogs or the testes in male cats and dogs through small incisions in the abdominal cavity.
Aside from the obvious benefit of preventing unwanted kittens or puppies (sadly, millions of stray or unwanted pets are sent to to US shelters every year), spaying and neutering also reduces or completely eliminates the risk of certain reproductive cancers. Sterilized animals have also been shown to live longer. Plus, the costs associated with pet reproduction--not to mention undesirable associated behaviors like roaming, aggression, marking, and bleeding (in females)--are avoided when you spay or neuter your pet.
Cats and dogs can be spayed or neutered at any age, although there are different benefits and drawbacks to having the procedure done at different ages (especially before or after your pet sexually matures). At our animal hospital in Klamath Falls, we typically will neuter cats and dogs around the ages of 6 to 9 months. However, even pets as young as 8-weeks-old can safely undergo a spaying or neutering procedure.
Before you bring your animal in to see us for its spay or neuter procedure, we'll likely ask you to refrain from feeding your pet for at least 12 hours prior to the appointment. This is because we'll be using general anesthesia during the procedure, in order to keep your pet as calm and comfortable as possible.
We'll perform your pet's spay or neuter procedure using state-of-the-art equipment and our advanced clinical skills. Your animal will be carefully monitored throughout the procedure--including during the immediate post-operative recovery phrase. Before you bring your animal home, we'll answer any questions you have and alert you to any signs or symptoms of adverse reactions or infections to look out for (which are rare).
